Yacht Service Technician
The Marine Industries Association of South Florida (MIASF) Yacht Service Technician Apprenticeship program will develop a cadre of high-skill/high-wage yacht service technicians and provide career advancement opportunities for program graduates at participating boatyards/shipyards. MIASF is dedicated to serving the needs of South Florida’s boatyards/shipyards as they work to maintain, repair, and overhaul yachts that travel the world and ultimately the waters of South Florida. These state-of-the-art vessels represent a growing global fleet of complex and high-visibility yachts that frequently need shipyard services, creating high demand for a thoroughly trained yacht service technician workforce. These occupations offer excellent compensation, long-term employment, and career advancement opportunities. The marine industry in South Florida accounts for 142,000 regional marine jobs and an annual economic output of $12 billion. MIASF and affiliating shipyards understand that the marine industry is experiencing an aging workforce and recognize that there is an urgent need to recruit, train, and certify Yacht Service Technicians in the South Florida area and beyond. The Yacht Service Technician Apprentice will be cross-trained in eight modules – (1) Shipyard Safety; (2) Workforce Employability Proficiencies; (3) Rigging; (4) Fitter/Outside Machining; (5) Pipefitter/Plumbing; (6) Welder/Fabricator (7) Yacht Painter; and (8) Shipyard/Yacht Carpenter. Working as full-time employees under a “journeyperson(s)”, apprentices will receive on-the-job training for a minimum of two years and will attend classes on the main campus of Atlantic Technical College in Coconut Creek for related classroom instruction.
